Jonathan Standefer and Matthew Genitempo actually started a social networking site which decided to share some crazy stuff said by their friends. Eventually they named it as Lamebook and launched it in 2009. The site became successful and currently it is drawing some 2000 submissions every day. Obviously the name of the networking site resembled with that of Facebook and ultimately it attracted the ire of social media giant.
One day Mr. Standeferof Lamebook received a call from Facebook legal counsel about the former’s infringement and dilution of the trademark rights, as it may lead to confusion among the users of social networking giant Facebook. They wanted Lamebook to take the word ‘book’ out of their site. However being proactive Mr. Standefer filed the first suit against the networking giant, as they found that their own posts were internally being sent companywide in Facebook.
It was followed by a countersuit from Facebook. But apparently Facebook has changed its attitude towards Lamebook. However it offered a very good recipe of satire and parody to the media directed against Lamebook, but they drew a huge support among the bloggers and online experts.
The positive outcome of this episode is that both the persons who had launched Lamebook have quit their regular jobs and joined Lamebook as full timers. They are also introducing iPhone applets and lots of ambitious things into it. They are also taking donations for their legal funds, so anybody interested in it may get in touch with Lamebook for that.
