Directory submission, a traditional practice of SEO, has seen a big jolt when Google directories ceased to exist recently. So, if you try to find Google directories you will be welcomed by a message that Google Directory is no longer available. They will direct you to web search instead of using directories. They also suggest you to use Open Directory Project at dmoz.org, if you prefer to browse a directory on the web.

It is largely done silently as the directory was not being used much. But any step taken by Google can never remain a quiet thing and that is what has happened. Though Google has not announced it anywhere in their blogs, press releases or Twitter accounts, but the news is creating ripples across the industry.
