Search Engines and their types

There is no record of how many times all of us must have talked about search engines but none cared to explore that they can also be categorized on the basis of their working style. Even if webmasters had knowledge that there is a strong difference in how various search engine function but seldom do we found any reference to their types.

In this write- up, we have presented before the readers Types of Search Engines:

Crawled-Based Search Engines: – Such search engines create a database of those pages which they find relevant to users’ search query. For this they make use of automated software programs, called ‘spiders’ or ‘crawlers’
that find the pages and analyze whether the information is relevant and then index it. When a user makes a search, they use their database and display the results according to the degree of relevant. The more the page is relevant, high will be its ranking on search result pages. Google is the perfect example of crawler based search engine.

Directories:- These have pre-determined rules according to which they place websites under specific categories. They use human editors who inspect the website and then decide its category.

Hybrid Search Engines:- Those search engines which combine the style of crawler –based engines and directories fall under the Hybrid search engines category.

Meta Search Engines:- These engines utilize the results of all other search engines to prepare a comprehensive listing.

Specialty Search Engines:- These search engines are meant to meet the particular demands related to certain niche areas which may include Shopping, Local Search, etc.
