An Introduction to Splogs

The Web World involves a wide range of techniques which webmasters use to serve their intended purposes. Some may be ethical while some other may amount to be deceptive in nature. Here we are going to briefly discuss about “Splogs”, which is one of the black hat techniques employed to dupe the search engines for attaining high rank.

What are Splogs?
Splogs are Spam Blogs with no useful content for the users. They are created with a following intent:

  • Promotion of affiliated websites
  • Increase Ranking of associated websites in Search Engines
  • Create Links to other sites
  • Sell ads or links
  • Attract traffic

Identifying Splogs:- Splogs can be easily identified as they have the following characteristics:

  • Automatically generate new content
  • Meaningless content, mostly lifted from other sites or blogs
  • Are stuffed with popular keywords

Effects of Splogs

  • They affect the Search Engine Rankings
  • Because of Duplicate Content, authentic Blogs may be considered as SPAM by search engines

In order to combat this problem, Google has published a list of splog sub-domains and also introduced CAPTCHA, a challenge–response test to make sure that the creator of blog is a human being and not a computer program.
